St. Paul's Baden is a community near Brandywine, in Prince Georges County Maryland. Our story has a significant place in the history of the Episcopal Church of Maryland. That story includes the history of the agricultural economy and Tobacco farming, and its effects on the evolving culture of Southern Maryland. In 1692, St. Paul's was founded as one of the first 30 Anglican Parishes established by the colonial Legislature of Maryland. The current church was constructed in 1733-1735 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1977. After the Revolution, The Reverend Dr Thomas Claggett became rector of the Parish. Later he was elected as the first Episcopal Bishop of Maryland, and the first to be consecrated in the United States. The Episcopal Church USA has members throughout the world, and is one of 44 provinces of the worldwide Anglican Communion, which traces its heritage to the beginnings of Christianity.
